In Memory of Serena Lawrence

2/17/1988 – 9/26/2018

Serena Lawrence served as the senior managing columns editor for BioNews Services for over 2 years, as well as a patient columnist for Pulmonary Hypertension News and Endometriosis News. She passed on Sept. 26, 2018 at 30 years old due to pulmonary veno-occlusive disease complications.

A masterful writer and generous leader, Serena amplified the voices of rare disease communities by recruiting and training columnists of more than 25 types of chronic and rare conditions. Her legacy exemplifies the colossal power of advocacy, of uniting disease communities to create a vast society, of writing and art in the midst of illness. She represents the tragedy of life ended too short by terminal illness, and the need for more treatment research.

BioNews honors her memory by boosting rare disease awareness and employing those with chronic and rare conditions. Serena wrote in 2016: “I wanted to help lend a voice to young adults who are facing pulmonary hypertension in hopes of offering support, and perhaps a sense of friendship.” She went beyond that. We thank her for her dedication and for building the foundations of what makes BioNews unique — our columnists. Serena is our family, and beloved.
